Sandukhtasar

Sandukhtasar

Vardenis Mountain Range

Height – 3454 m

Coordinates – 40.010488, 45.601816

Mount Sandukhtasar is located on the border of Gegharkunik, Vayots Dzor and Artsakh, on the eastern side of the Vardenis Mountain Range, 12 km south of the village Maqenis. Sandukhtasar is the third highest peak in the Vardenis Mountain Range. The right tributary of the Karchaghbyur River, Gzhoyiget, starts from the northeastern slope of the mountain. The left tributary of the Karchaghbyur River, Yerpnadzor, starts from the southwestern slope.  The mountain has a conical shape and steep slopes. The slopes are rocky, covered with subalpine, alpine, meadow vegetation.

A wonderful view of Lake Sevan and Big and Small Al lakes opens from the top of the mountain.

We suppose that the mountain got its name from the word “sandukhk” (stairway), since the relief of the summit of Sandukhtasar resembles a stairway.
