Mount Hatis (Hadis, Shamiram’s Mountain) is an extinct volcano in Kotayk region. The height is 2528m. It is cone-shaped, the slopes are with sharp ravines. The landscape is alpine meadow. There is an underground hideaway on the top of Mountain Hatis, the mountaineers call it a cave of Hatis.
Mount Hatis is also called Shamiram, it is connected with the story of Ara the Beautiful and Assirian queen Semiramis (Shamiram). It is also said that the name is connected with the Phrygian mythology. Here Attis was the God of dying and resuscitating nature which corresponds to Ara in Armenian mythology. So the mount was originally connected with the name of Ara the Beautiful and later got the name of Shamiram.
