Mount Gomshasar (translated as the mount of bubalus) is the highest peak of the Mrav mountain range. The peak is also known as Gomesh, Keamush, or Gyamish. The altitude of the mountain is 3724m. Gomshasar is also called Ariutyan (valiancy) mountain. Mrav mountain range is the third highest range in Armenia, though some old sources indicate that the third highest range in Armenia is Geghama. Let’s define why.
Mount Gomshasar
Why Mrav mountain range is the third highest one in Armenia
20 years ago, at the end of December 1993, the battle of Omar began, which was one of the bloodiest battles of the Nagorno-Karabakh War. Passing through Omar Pass (by the way, it is 7 km far from Gomshasar), the troops of Azerbaijan nearly approached the liberated region of Qarvajar, but were repulsed by our army. This battle ended in February 1994 with a crushing defeat of the enemy, which stabilized the front line of the Mrav mountain range. Today the most important places of Mrav mountain range are under the control of Armed Forces of Artsakh (the passes of Gomshasar and Omar, peaks such as Mount Gomshasar, Omar and Mrav).
The mountains of Big Hinal (3367m) and Qyoroghludag (3462m) are under the Azerbaijani control. So, after cessation of hostilities Mrav became the third highest mountain range in Armenia. The first is the volcanic massif of Aragats (the highest peak is Aragats, 4090m), the second is Zangezur mountain range (with Kaputjugh summit, 3905m), the third one is Mrav, the forth is Tsrasar mountain range, with its peak of Tsrasar (3616m), the fifth one is volcanic massif of Geghama (the highest peak is Azhdahak (3597m)).
