Our one-day culural tour to Lori region will help you discover the wonders of Lori and will make you feel the spirit of ancient architecture accompanied with breathtaking nature of the Lori region of Armenia.
Haghpat Monastery
Our first stop will be monasteries Haghpat and Sanahin, which used to be important educational centres. These two monasteries represent the highest blossoming of Armenian religious architecture between the 10th and 13th centuries.
The monastery of Haghpat was founded by Queen Khosrovanush (wife of the Armenian King Ashot III) in AD 976. The small church of St. Nishan is Haghpat’s earliest surviving building. The construction began in 966-67 and was later enlarged and embellished under the direction of Trdat the Architect.
Sanahin Monastery
The Sanahin monastery contains St Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God), St Amenaprkich and St Grigor Churches. The interior brings your focus to the center, and to the harmony between its square base and round dome.
Haghpat and Sanahin monasteries are included in the World Heritage List of UNESCO.
Odzun Monastery
The last monastery visit of the day will be Odzun. There are numerous gravestones of the clergy around the church and a funerary monument. Its stepped platform supports two carved stelae between double arches.
The east and west sides of the monument are carved with scenes from the Bible and introduction of Christianity in Armenia.
Lori Fortress
And then we will continue to Lori fortress, which used to be a big cultural and trading centre.Walking by the ruins of the fortress try to imagine the erstwhile bustling lanes and the lively atmosphere… almost 10,000 people once lived in that territory.
In Lori were found different tools, weapons, jewelry, different vessels made of clay, glass or stone. This shows that different kinds of handicrafts were well developed in Lori.
Dendropark
We will proceed to move on to a quiet and peaceful place called Dendropark. After spending most of the day sitting in a bus, a little walk wouldn’t hurt. This botanical garden is like a heaven on earth. There are more than 2500 species of plants and 500 species of trees in Dendropark.
After a pleasant walk in Dendropark we will visit Lorva Orran, where you will be told about Armenian wedding traditions and participate in a wedding ceremony, where you will learn various elements of Armenian wedding dances.
In the evening we will return to Yerevan.
