Bargushat Mountains

Length: 86 km
Highest peak: Mount Aramazd (3,399 m)

The Bargushat Mountains, which constitute the eastern branch of the Zangezur Chain, are located in Syunik Region. The range begins from Mount Ayrisar of the Zangezur Chain and stretches eastward as far as Mount Aghjkasar. From this point, it turns south-east and reaches the valley of the Voghji, serving as a watershed between this river and the Vorotan. The slopes are broken up by the deep (up to 800 m) valleys of the tributaries of the Vorotan and Geghi.

The Bargushat Mountains range which consists of fault-block mountains is divided into western and eastern sections by the Giratagh and Svarants River Valleys. The western section is a raised horst block composed of metamorphic and sedimentary rocks of the Paleozoic, volcanic-sedimentary rocks of the Eocene and granitoids. Here are located Mounts Aramazd, Geghakar (3,343 m), Karakatar (3,270 m) and Yerkatasar (3,227 m).

The eastern section is comparatively lower and has slanted sides composed of volcanic rocks of the Jurassic and the Cretaceous.

The slopes are forested, with subalpine and alpine meadows in the elevated regions.

The higher altitudes are characterized by cold mountain climate which is temperate in the lower areas, with annual precipitation ranging between 500 and 800 mm. Stable snow cover is typical of wintertime.
