The seminar “Armenian Highland” took place at Elite Plaza business center on May 19, 2016. It was conducted by Tigran Shahbazyan, a founder of “Armenian Geographic Project” and a board member of “Armenian Hiking and Mountaineering Federation”.
The goal of the seminar
The main goals of the seminar were to inform people about the location and boundaries of the Armenian Highland, to draw attention to a concept “Armenian Highland” as an internationally accepted term, to present the highest point of the Armenian highland, to clarify the difference between the use of the concepts Republic of Armenia and Armenian Highland and to speak about the project “Ours”, which is unique in Armenia.
Geographical position and boundaries of Armenian Highland
At the beginning of the seminar we held a presentation about geological processes during which the Armenian Highland was formed. The position of the highland was considered at macro, meso and micro levels, then the relief and its main units were introduced: fold-fractured mountains, surrounding the highland, and smaller ones. Also the difference between Armenian highland and Armenian plateau was emphasized.
Afterwards, the highest mountains, active and extinct volcanoes, large lakes and their origins, endemic animals, were presented.
Project “Ours”
In the second part of the event the project “Ours” was presented. Within the framework of this project “Armenian Geographic” organized ascents to the highest peaks of all mountain ranges of Armenia.
During the seminar prizes were awarded to those who climbed the biggest amount of mountains, to organizers of the cleanup of Sevan territory and to the one who answered the quiz question. At the end all the participants received gift cards.
